A Dead GS-2646 Scissor Lift Taught Me to Read the Battery Tender Charger Manual

The morning the lift went dark

Last October, our GS-2646 scissor lift wouldn't move. Not “hesitated for a second.” I mean the battery was done—dead, no clicks, no lights, no chance. It was sitting in the bay at 7:45 AM, and we had a two-man crew ready to pull inventory for a property manager's year-end audit. Our only way to reach the top shelves was that lift. And it wasn't going anywhere.

That's when I started learning more about battery management than I ever wanted to know.

The setup: a shop owner who should have known better

I run a small independent shop. For eight years, I've been the person who handles equipment and consumables orders—batteries, chargers, jump starters, power stations, tools, even the spray polish we try to standardize. I've made mistakes. Some were small. One cost me $450 and a full day when an older jump starter failed during a customer call in 2017.

Last October's dead lift was worse because I should have seen it coming.

The twist: the manual actually mattered

Could I have avoided the whole thing? Yes. The manual was telling me the whole time.

When I put the maintainer and the jump starter side by side, the whole concept finally clicked. One is a slow, steady relationship. The other is an emergency rescue. Asking a maintainer to act like a jump starter is the same mistake as asking a jump starter to maintain a battery—it will let you down eventually.

The checklist now

Here's what changed:

  • Every battery in the shop—scissor lift, jump starter, power station, and the fleet vehicles—now has a name on a sticker and a Battery Tender maintainer assigned to it.
  • The Battery Tender charger manual lives in a plastic sleeve near the chargers, not in a filing cabinet.
  • After each use, the 1500-amp jump starter gets reconnected to its own maintainer. No exceptions.

As of January 2025, we haven't had another dead battery delay in six months. I still kick myself for not reading the jump starter manual before the lift died. But I do not need to be right every time; I need to be right the next time.
