Back when I first started overseeing incoming accessory shipments, I assumed a model number was a model number. If the carton said '5-bank battery charger,' I verified the bank count, looked for physical damage, and let the pallet move to stock. Four years later, I manage quality and brand compliance for an automotive charging company, and I review roughly 200 supplier line items each year. In 2024, I rejected 12% of first deliveries. The reasons were not all dramatic: late-stage documentation, wrong product marking on the outer carton, and a multi-bank unit where one bank never reached float.
This checklist is for distributors, repair shops, and fleet stockrooms that receive chargers on the same pallet as other 12V accessories. A 20 bar light can power on and still fail in rain because the lens seal was pinched during assembly. Check the connector locks, the harness gauge, and the mounting bracket. Dashcam radar is another product with a different failure mode. It is not just a power consumer; it contains a transmitter. In the U.S., a dashcam radar unit has to display a valid FCC ID before it can be legally marketed. I check for the FCC ID before I evaluate image quality or parking-mode current draw. A clean power draw will not make an uncertified RF product legal.
Step 5: Check the documentation for overclaims, not just function
The marketing copy is not the contract specification. The spec is what the vendor agreed to supply: voltages, charging curves, protection features, and tolerances. Keep that in the receiving file.
As of January 2025, every maintainer we approve has overcurrent protection and reverse-polarity protection built in. If an incoming unit lacks those protections but the PO requires them, I do not care how well it performs in a bench test. It is out of spec.
I also read the copy on the box for absolute promises. Per FTC business guidance on advertising (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), claims have to be truthful, substantiated, and not misleading. An unqualified phrase like 'charges any dead battery instantly' is a compliance problem before it is a selling problem. Reject the copy before the product goes to the shelf.
Step 6: Include load ratings in the inspection for roof racks
This step feels out of place until a roof-rack product generates a liability claim. The most common customer question is, 'Can I carry a kayak on my roof rack?' The useful answer is: yes, if the rack's dynamic load rating is higher than the total weight of the kayak and the kayak is secured to the crossbars at two contact points.
The risk is using the static load rating from the product box. Static load is the number when the vehicle is parked. Dynamic load, the rating that matters on the highway, is often lower. If the documentation does not include a dynamic load rating, that rack is not fully specified for kayak carrying. Do not let a salesperson invent that number.
Common mistakes I still see on receiving docks
First, testing one unit from one carton. With a 5-bank charger, one good channel tells you nothing about the other four.
Second, treating a wrong-brand substitution as an acceptable convenience. If the PO says Battery Tender 5 Bank and the carton says something else, stop the process. That decision belongs to procurement, not to the receiving team.
Third, discarding the evidence before you document it. Keep a photo of the label, the lot code, and the test reading. That is what gets a corrected shipment back to you without a long argument.
That sounds like a lot of process. I do not mean it that way. A quality checklist is just a way of making the same decision twice: the first time in receiving, not the second time in a customer phone call.
