1. Clean the battery posts before you connect anything. Corrosion is not just ugly. It's a resistor. A maintainer needs accurate voltage to know whether to charge or maintain. If there is crust under a clamp, the charger sees it and blinks red. Mix baking soda with a little water, scrub the posts with a terminal brush, rinse, and dry. Yes, this is basic. 2. Verify the clamp is biting metal, not insulation. It sounds stupid, but it happens. A clamp can catch the rubber boot, a loose ring terminal, or a battery post adapter. You'd think a clamp would be simple, but corrosion and loose contacts create phantom failures. 6. Blow out the battery tray with a 20-gallon portable air compressor. This is the counterintuitive one. Battery trays collect metal filings, road salt, oil film, and dust. That crud can create a slow drain or a high-resistance path, and it can confuse the charger's voltage sense. Use an industrial air 20 gallon portable air compressor with a blow gun to clean the tray, the battery top, and the area around the clamp before you connect. It takes about twenty seconds and has saved us more than one false diagnosis. If you don't have a compressor at the battery bench, this is a good reason to get one. A 20-gallon portable unit is enough for this kind of shop maintenance.

7. Write down the result. Here's the part everyone skips. We use a digital log on a tablet with a photo of the clamp placement. It takes less than a minute.
