Every winter, we field the same calls: dead batteries, trucks that won't crank, and drivers asking whether they need a new battery or just a charge. What exactly is a Battery Tender, and how is it different from a regular charger?

A standard battery charger pushes current at a fixed rate until you unplug it. A Battery Tender uses multi-stage charging — bulk, absorption, float — to bring a battery to full charge and then hold it there without overcharging. That's the "tender" part. It maintains instead of just charging.

Do I really need a battery tender for winter, or is that overkill?

Honestly, I used to think it was overkill. Then January 2024 happened. We had 14 vehicles down in one week — all with batteries that tested "fine" in October. Cold weather exposes a weak battery fast.

Here's the chemistry: a fully charged battery at 32°F only delivers about 70% of its rated cranking amps. At 0°F, that falls to around 60%. If your car battery is dead, will the radio work?

This sounds like a trick question, but it's one of the most common causes of misdiagnosis we see. Yes, the radio can work while the battery is too weak to crank the engine.

The starter motor is the single biggest electrical draw in a vehicle, pulling 150 to 250 amps. The radio and dashboard lights draw only a few amps. A battery can have enough energy remaining to power the radio, but not enough capacity to deliver the sudden amperage the starter needs.

So when someone says "the radio comes on but the engine won't start," that's usually a capacity or cranking-amp problem, not a completely dead battery. Here's something vendors won't tell you: most batteries that get replaced for "being dead" are actually just undercharged. A proper load test reveals the real story. That's where a battery maintainer earns its keep — it prevents the undercharged state from turning into an unnecessary replacement.

What's the best tire inflator for trucks?

I'll be upfront: this isn't a product category Battery Tender makes. But after kitting out 47 service trucks, I have opinions.

For a truck tire inflator, look at three things: duty cycle, pressure rating, and power source.

  • Duty cycle: a cheap inflator that overheats after five minutes is useless for a truck tire. Get one rated for at least 30 minutes of continuous operation.
  • Pressure rating: passenger-car inflators usually top out around 120 PSI. Truck tires need 80 to 110 PSI depending on the axle. Look for a unit rated at 150 PSI or higher.
  • Power source: for fleet use, choose a 12V inflator that clips directly to the battery rather than one that relies on the accessory socket.

From our last fleet reorder in December 2024: decent 12V truck-capable inflators run $60 to $120. Brushless 150-PSI models from known brands sit around $100 to $130. Anything under $40 is almost certainly not going to survive commercial use. And yes — a flat tire at 6 AM in February is an emergency. Spending $100 once beats a $300 roadside call every time.

What's the best car detailing polish for fleet vehicles?

This is outside our battery focus, so I'll give you the honest version. We're not a detailing company, but we do keep our fleet presentable because a beat-up truck reflects on the whole operation.

The "best" car detailing polish depends on the job. For fleet work, two categories matter:

  • All-in-one polish for light oxidation and water spots. These have mild abrasives and leave a little protection behind. It's not the show-car choice, but it's fast — and speed matters when you have 20 trucks to rotate through.
  • Heavy-cut compound for faded clearcoat, deep swirling, and real paint defects. This means a two-step process, compound then polish, and it takes time. Any reputable heavy-cut product will do the job; the technique matters more than the brand.

One underrated fleet requirement: find something that works in direct sunlight. If your crews are polishing outdoors, that alone will save you hours of waiting for panels to cool down.

When is a battery actually beyond saving?

Here's what I wish every shop owner knew: a battery reading 12.4 volts is only about 75% charged, but plenty of people call that "healthy." A fully charged battery reads around 12.6 to 12.7 volts. Knowing the difference prevents both premature replacement and surprise failures.

We learned this the hard way. Two trucks failed on the same morning in February 2023 — both with batteries we'd marked "fine" during a quick voltage check. We missed a delivery deadline and lost a client over it. That's when I implemented a mandatory 48-hour buffer: every vehicle gets a full load test before November now.

A battery is beyond saving when it fails a load test (voltage drops below 9.6V during a 15-second load at half the CCA rating), won't accept a charge above 10.5V, or is physically swollen, cracked, or leaking. If it passes those checks but is just undercharged, a multi-stage maintainer can usually bring it back. If it fails, replace it before it strands someone.
