The Battery Tender Checklist: 7 Steps We Use Before Storing Any 12V or 6V Vehicle

The 7-Step Pre-Storage Checklist

Before a vehicle sits for more than two weeks, I care about three things: the battery, hitch accessories, and the paint. This checklist is for shop managers, fleet prep leads, dealer techs, and anyone storing customer vehicles. I've been a service manager handling battery and accessory orders for 7 years. I've personally made (and documented) 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $7,300 in wasted battery replacements, missed rack compatibility, and paint rework. Now I maintain our team's pre-storage checklist, and it looks like this.

There are 7 steps. If you do them in order, you'll catch most issues before they become callbacks.

Before the steps, one mindset shift: Everything I'd read about long-term storage said 'just disconnect the battery.' In practice, disconnecting caused a different set of problems: lost memory settings, security codes, and sensor faults. We now keep the battery connected whenever we can mount a maintainer safely.

The Checklist

  1. Confirm the system voltage before you pick a tender. Look at the battery label or the owner's manual. Modern cars, trucks, and most trailers use 12V. Some classic cars, motorcycles, and small power equipment use 6V. A 12 v battery tender belongs on a 12V system. A battery tender 6 volt is a separate tool, not a setting to flip. Using the wrong voltage can damage the battery and any connected electronics. If the label is worn, check the service documentation before guessing.
  2. Load-test the battery before hooking up anything. This is the mistake I made most often in my first year. A battery can read 12.4V and still fail under load. The battery-care rule I rely on comes from Battery Council International (batterycouncil.org): inspect before you charge, and test before you assume. We use a conductance tester. If the battery fails, a tender won't fix it. No amount of smart charging brings back a damaged cell.
  3. Use ring terminals, not spring clips, for long-term connections. Spring clips work for a quick charge but they creep off in cold weather and create resistance if the contact is loose. We install ring terminals on the battery and route a dedicated quick-connect harness to the front grille.   4. Find and log parasitic drains before storage. GPS trackers, dashcams, and aftermarket alarms can draw power even with the key off. That sounds okay until the vehicle sits through a long winter. We use a clamp meter in key-off mode to confirm the drain. If it's high, don't just rely on the tender; fix the load.
  5. Inspect the hitch and bike rack before putting the vehicle away. This is the step most people ignore. The best car hand wax is the one that actually gets applied before the vehicle sits. We use a polymer-based hand wax on fleet vehicles and a carnauba blend on showroom cars. Spray-on detailers are fine for a weekend, but not for months of dust, bird droppings, and temperature swings.
  7. Label, log, and schedule a re-check. Every vehicle gets a label with the date, battery voltage, tender serial number, load test result, hitch receiver size, and wax date. This sounds like extra work, but it saves arguments later. In the past 18 months, this checklist has caught 47 potential problems before vehicles left our lot.

When This Checklist Won't Save You

I recommend this for vehicles that will sit for more than 14 days. But I don't recommend it for every situation. If a battery fails a load test, no tender will resurrect it. If a customer drives the vehicle daily, the full hookup and long-storage prep is overkill. If a bike rack exceeds the hitch's rating, no adapter or zip tie makes it safe. This checklist works for about 80% of stored vehicles. The other 20% usually have electrical faults or customer-modified wiring that need a proper diagnosis before anything gets connected.
